Being a “Mum in the Mix” is all about pursuing those things you’re really passionate about. It’s taking a step back from work or motherhood or whatever it is that takes up a lot of your time out of necessity, and working out what it is that really brings you joy.
Is it cooking? Is it being a listening ear to friends? Is it running or exercise? Is singing in a choir or playing in a band? Is it volunteering for Meals on Wheels?
Well – now is the time to do it! Pursue it! Make the most of your time by filling it with what you love. Not only will it bring you happiness and fulfilment, it’ll make you a better mum, wife, friend, daughter. It’s not about being selfish, it’s about putting yourself first for once, and you’ll most probably find that it’ll have a positive impact on those around you as well.
Here are some ideas:
- get involved in your local parkrun. It’s a free, 5km timed run, every Saturday morning, at dozens of locations around the country. Not only can you run or walk, but you can volunteer. It’s a fantastic way to meet new friends, be part of the community and improve your fitness! We started up the event at Sandgate, but there are heaps of other locations – check them out here! www.parkrun.com.au/sandgate
- meet local mums: if you’re not already part of one, join or start a Facebook group for mums in your area. I’m part of Sandgate Mums and it’s been a fabulous way to meet new friends, share local knowledge and recommendations, organise regular catch ups and feel a part of the community. There have also been several spin-off groups start up, including a local Book Club, Sewing Group and Running Group.
- support a great organisation: if you feel passionate about a particular area, find an organisation that’s out there doing something and get involved. I’ve become an ambassador of Kidsafe, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention of unintentional childhood injuries. It’s another fantastic way to meet new people, help make a difference and be involved in something that’s so important.
- reach out to those in need: the best way to help yourself is to help others. Organisations like Nexus Care are always after help in getting food parcels out to struggling families. They also provide cooking classes and do so much to help the local community.
Whatever your area of passion, there’s sure to be an organisation who could use some help!
I’d love to hear your ideas about how to get involved in the community!
